Dealing with neck pain? Find out how getting chiropractic care in Richmond, VA, could help.Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common complaint. Whether you are an athlete who experienced a recent injury or you are often sitting hunched over a computer day in and day out, there are many scenarios that can affect your musculoskeletal health. Our Richmond, VA, chiropractor Dr. Scott Shaw is here to shed a little light on how chiropractic treatment could improve your neck problems.

What are some causes of neck pain?

There are many reasons someone might experience neck pain, from minor, temporary disturbances to serious long-term health issues. Neck pain can be the result of:

  • Trauma (e.g. whiplash)
  • Bad posture
  • Degenerative disorders (e.g. herniated disc)
  • A pinched nerve
  • Muscular strain
  • Bone or joint structure abnormalities

When should I visit a chiropractor about my neck pain?

While waking up with a stiff neck from sleeping in an awkward position may not warrant a trip to see our Richmond, VA, chiropractic doctor, there are some instances in which it might be time to seek a professional opinion.

It’s a good idea to see us if your symptoms don’t improve after a couple days (particularly with proper at-home care), if you have trouble moving your neck without experiencing severe pain, if you need to take pain medications regularly, if your symptoms appeared after an injury, or if you have numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms, hands or wrists.

What therapy will be right for me?

There are a variety of different manual techniques that we can perform to help improve the alignment and function of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the neck. Certain techniques include flexion-distraction, manual manipulation, trigger point therapy or instrument-assisted manipulation. We may also recommend electrical stimulation or ultrasound.

We can also show you certain stretching and neck-strengthening exercises you can perform on your own every day. These exercises will help to reduce pain and swelling while also improving mobility and range-of-motion by strengthening the muscles and soft tissue of the neck. We can also provide certain ergonomic recommendations such as better office chairs, which can improve your posture and reduce your chances of a neck strain.

Don’t let neck pain be the norm. If other treatment options aren’t helping you and you want a safe and effective way to reduce your pain then it’s time you turned to Shaw Chiropractic Center in Richmond, VA.
