What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve connects the spinal cord with the leg and foot muscles running down the spine, through the thigh, and down to the foot. Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and can cause pain from your back all the way down your legs if the nerve is compressed. Sciatica is a term for any pain, weakness, or numbness along the sciatic nerve. This is caused by something rubbing against or pressing on the nerve, most commonly a slipped disc. Sciatica symptoms can range from shooting pain to numbness and tingling. As soon as you notice symptoms come visit us to treat your sciatica in Richmond, VA.

Non-invasive treatments

It's important to seek treatment as soon as you have symptoms because if the nerve is compressed for a long period of time, you risk permanent damage to the largest nerve in your body. Chiropractic treatment, including adjustments and spinal decompression, can realign the spine and take pressure off the nerve.

Your chiropractor may recommend over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs to ease discomfort, but what will be most important is stretching out your muscles, corrective exercises, and physical therapy to stretch and strengthen your muscles and take pressure off the nerve. Your doctor's suggestions could include losing weight if obesity is aggravating your sciatica, or wearing orthotics to help align your spine and relieve pain as you walk.
