What is Sciatica?

Find out if that nerve pain in your leg could be sciatica and how we can help?

The sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, begins within the spinal cord near the lower back, where it then stretches down thesciatica buttock to the leg and into the foot. If you are experiencing true sciatic pain then you may notice pain either at your lower back or behind the leg (often near the thigh) that extends to the thigh. Our Richmond, VA, chiropractor Dr. Scott Shaw is here to tell you more about this common symptom and how chiropractic treatment might alleviate an irritated sciatic nerve.

What causes sciatica?

There are a few things that could be to blame for your sciatica. In many cases, an irritation of the roots of the lower spine is the culprit. Other causes of sciatica include:

  • Muscle spasms of the lower back
  • Pregnancy
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Tumors
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis

Symptoms of sciatica can be exacerbated by poor posture, an old or worn mattress, leading a sedentary lifestyle, being overweight or wearing high heels.

What are symptoms of sciatica?

If you have sciatica then you may experience pain in the back of the leg that begins at the thigh and extends to the knee (it can even extend as far as the feet and toes). The pain may get worse when sitting down. You may also experience back or hip pain. The most common symptoms include burning, shooting pains, weakness or a constant throbbing pain on the affected side. In most cases, sciatica will only affect one side of the body.
