Discover how your Richmond chiropractor could improve your musculoskeletal pain with one non-invasive therapy.

Dealing with muscular pain and swelling that makes it difficult to enjoy life? Have you tried other treatments but not experienced much relief? You could continue to try certain prescription and nonprescription painkillers and anti-inflammatories in the hopes that you’ll find some reprieve from your uncomfortable symptoms; however, your Richmond chiropractor offers a therapeutic technique that could effectively target and treat your problem areas for good.

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Sometimes referred to as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), this handheld laser treatment emits a certain wavelength to help promote faster and more effective tissue healing. The laser therapy has the power to target muscles, nerves, ligaments and cartilage about two to five centimeters below the top layer of the skin.

What does Cold Laser Therapy treat?

Cold laser therapy is a great option for someone dealing with both acute and chronic health issues that cause inflammation, pain, spasms and limited mobility. It can treat a variety of musculoskeletal problems caused by injuries, heredity or just normal aging. Many conditions can benefit from cold laser therapy:

  • Back, knee and neck pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendonitis
  • Some sports-related conditions (e.g. bursitis; plantar fasciitis)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Sciatica

What should I expect during my cold laser therapy session?

When you come in for treatment, the laser is placed over the area you wish to treat for anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. How long the laser is directed at the skin will depend on the size of the treatment area. The procedure is non-invasive and completely painless. Some patients may notice a slight warming or tingling sensation during treatment; however, most patients don’t feel anything.

Do I need to have more than one cold laser therapy session?

This will depend on the type and severity of your condition. Some sessions only last about a minute while others may last up to 10 minutes or more. Treatment lengths range anywhere from six to 20 sessions, depending on how well your body’s healing response reacts to this therapy. Of course, the less severe the condition the fewer treatments needed.

While will I start to notice an improvement in my symptoms?

Some of our patients notice a reduction in their symptoms right away while others can take anywhere from three or more sessions before they start to notice a change. Everyone responds differently depending on their body.
