No matter which way you sleep or turn your head when you're driving, you're in pain. Your left shoulder will not quiet down, and you don't Shoulder Painwant to take oral pain meds indefinitely. At Shaw Chiropractic Center in Richmond, your chiropractor, Dr. Scott Shaw, loves freeing his patients from the discomforts of rotator cuff problems. Amazingly, they're often unrelated to acute injury! Learn more here.

Basic shoulder anatomy

Your shoulder is an amazing body part—composed of the upper portion of your arm bone (the humerus) and the shoulder blade (scapula), your shoulder rotates through a wide range of motion. It's supported and held together by bands of muscle and connective tissue called the rotator cuff.

Shoulder pain and other symptoms

Common to athletes that participate in high impact sports, rotator cuff problems come from sudden, acute injuries, as well as from overuse, arthritis, tendinitis, and gout.

However, besides these well-known issues, shoulder pain also may originate in cervical spine misalignments. In other words, the vertebrae in your neck may be deteriorating, pinching nerves or lacking the cushioning provided by healthy intervertebral discs. As such, pain starting in the neck can radiate to the shoulders, causing muscular spasms, soreness, and impaired function.

Getting evaluation and treatment

Your Richmond chiropractor is an avid athlete himself. As such, he dedicates his chiropractic practice to relief of pain and optimization of function. If you have persistent shoulder pain, Dr. Shaw can help.

When you come to Shaw Chiropractic Center for evaluation of your shoulder pain, expect a complete chiropractic evaluation. During this examination, your doctor will look for spinal subluxations, or areas of vertebral misalignments. He also may take X-rays, CT scans, or an MRI as needed.

Many times, shoulder pain responds very well to spinal adjustments and to common sense strategies such as:

  • Massage therapy to improve muscular function and relax soft tissues
  • Rest and ice or heat
  • Better ergonomics (posture exercises and aligning the ears with both shoulders, reports LiveStrong)
  • Acupuncture
  • Cold laser therapy (low-level light therapy which creates no sensation of heat)

Don't you feel better?

Take that hurting left shoulder to Shaw Chiropractor Center's Richmond Office. Dr. Shaw will come up with a care plan which makes pain a thing of the past. Call (804) 741-3068 to schedule your appointment.

A migraine is a severe pounding headache that can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a few days. The pain can be excruciating, Migrainemaking it impossible to do anything but curl up in bed with the lights off. If you are someone who suffers from frequent or severe migraines, you may be relieved to hear that our Richmond chiropractor Dr. Scott Shaw can help!

What are the symptoms of a migraine?

A migraine can last anywhere from four to 72 hours if left untreated, and auras (e.g. flashes of light or visual disturbances) are often the first indicators of an impending migraine. Other symptoms include,

  • Throbbing or pulsing headache on one or both sides of the head
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizzy or lightheaded
  • Feeling faint

If you’ve been dealing with symptoms of a migraine it’s important that you make note of the symptoms that you’ve been experiencing so you can talk to your doctor about your headaches. If pain is severe, debilitating, or accompanied by a head injury, it’s important that you seek immediate medical attention.

What causes migraines?

Figuring out what triggers your migraines is crucial, as you may be able to prevent a headache if you avoid the trigger altogether. While genes may play a role in who develops migraines there are environmental factors that can also trigger attacks. Common triggers include,

  • Hormonal fluctuations in women (e.g. menstrual cycle; pregnancy)
  • Certain foods such as salty and processed foods
  • Skipping meals or fasting
  • Food additives (E.g. aspartame; MSG)
  • Caffeine or alcohol
  • Stress
  • Loud sounds
  • Strong smells (e.g. perfume; smoke)
  • Jet lag or poor sleep
  • Extreme physical exertion (e.g. marathon running)
  • Environmental changes (e.g. weather; barometric pressure)
  • Certain medications (e.g. birth control pills)

How can a chiropractor treat my migraine symptoms?

One of the main goals of chiropractic treatment is to improve the alignment of the body to reduce pain and improve overall functionality and mobility. It’s also great for stimulating the body’s natural healing process.

Spinal manipulation is the most popular chiropractic treatment we offer here in Richmond, VA, because it can target a wide range of musculoskeletal complaints such as neck and back pain, headaches, migraines, and joint problems.

When the spine is out of alignment, this impacts the nerves, which can then lead to migraines. By realigning the spine, we can reduce tension and improve how the nerves, ligaments, and tissue in the body function as a whole to reduce your risk for the condition.

There are also lifestyle modifications we can recommend to reduce migraine triggers such as eating a healthy diet, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, getting regular exercise, and getting quality sleep every night.

1. Migraines/Headaches

Many Americans suffer from headaches. Taking pain medication and hoping your headache disappears is one option, but there is a better one. Studies have shown that spinal manipulation is an effective way to counter migraines and headaches, with immediate relief sometimes as a result.

2. Stress/Anxiety

Stress is how your brain and body responds to exhausting demands such as school, work, or any major life changes. Some stress can be good for you, as it produces a boost that provides the drive to help people achieve their goals. Too much of it, though, can have health consequences and take a severe toll on your mental health. Chiropractors work primarily with the spine and can help the body manage and process stress in a healthier way.

3. Blood Pressure

Hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure) occurs when blood pressure is higher than normal, and if left untreated, it can lead to a range of health problems, including stroke and heart disease. A recent study showed that spinal manipulation could give people suffering from high blood pressure the same effect as taking certain high blood pressure medications, with positive effects lasting for several months after the adjustment.

4. Chronic Pain

Research shows that both spinal manipulation and therapeutic ultrasound can help with chronic neck and back pain. Ultrasound is used to provide deep heating to the tissues in the body in order to help reduce your pain and speed up the healing process. Many chiropractors also offer electrotherapy treatments to their patients. This treatment works by sending out electrical impulses to charge block pain signals and reduce the pain you feel.

5. Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the top causes of pain, joint problems, and tension. Chronic inflammation has also been linked to a number of conditions such as chronic pain, heart disease, and cancer. Chiropractic care has been shown to reduce inflammation, which can lead to a number of positive benefits, including reduced muscle tension and pain relief. Reduced inflammation can also help lower your risk of developing diseases that are linked to high inflammation.
